things we lost in the fire
Saturday, October 4th, 2008so, from day one, when jannone and i would see the preview of this film, we’d groan. it may be one of the worst titles in history - definitely the one that has kept me most from actually diving in and watching the film. i was thinking, “hokey love story between widow and best friend of dead husband.” but no.
it was actually a touching story (maybe i was PMSing) of tragic events that preceded the building of a life-long friendship. SPOILER ALERT!! they don’t get together. THANK GOD. at least not during the span of the movie. but it’s a nice story of loss and of forgiveness.
then, as i watched the credits, i realized that susanne bier and many other fellow danes worked on this movie. so, OF COURSE the title was horrible!! english is not their first language and they don’t understand how shitty the title was!
but people, this may be a chick flick and maybe you only want to watch it some weekend when you’re home with the flu, but it’s a decent movie and the acting/makeup/sets/lighting/wardrobe is unobtrusive and totally bearable - meanwhile, the story is touching and beautiful.
oh, and PS - PAULA NEWSOME totally rocks! (sorry if the lobby nazi was ever mean to you.)
