10 days on the wedding countdown

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

Kirsten has a really great friend from high school that I absolutely adore.  Nate.  Oh Nate.  I love him.

Nate used to live in LA before going to medical school in Chicago and we used to have lots of fun.  One early morning some years ago after a long and crazy night, we were all at Kirsten’s and Nate decided he absolutely had to have a shower then and there at 6am.  When he got out of the shower with a towel wrapped around his waist, we engaged him in conversation.  He was standing in the doorway of the bathroom and the bedroom, we were lying on Kirsten’s bed like three peas in a pod.  All of a sudden, Rena yelled out, “Show us your package!” and an eternal friendship was born.  (PS - He didn’t not succumb to peer pressure… the towel stayed on.)

I don’t know why I didn’t think of it earlier but it just occured to me that Nate is probably invited to Kirsten’s wedding.  So I asked Kirsten today if Nate was coming and she explained that either he or his fiancee are on call at the hospital that weekend and are doubting that they can make it.  Unacceptable!  I won’t have it!  So I’ve started sending him wedding countdown text messages.  “10 days until Kirsten becomes Mrs. Scott - you’d better be there.”

He wrote back telling me how sorry he was but he doubted he’d make it but wishes me all the happiness in the world.  Huh?!  Oh.  He thought I was Kirsten.  Haha.  Normally Kirsten and I are never mistaken for each other.  We have completely different styles.  For example, I received an email from her today.  The subject line read, “Masterpiece,” and the body stated simply, “I want to report that today I laid a 12-inch PLUS unbroken poop. It was truly a work of art.”

Brad made his television debut tonight as a communications technology expert on The Unit’s second season premier on CBS. I found it funny that he’s a tech expert as he has a hard time in real life when it comes to anything technical.

Brad’s friends Chris MacEwan and Rachel Earl came over to watch the show, drink beer and eat pizza. I have heard about Rachel for years now and have never met her. She was Snuffalupagus - I started to think she didn’t exist, that they’d made her up. But I can now swear that she is alive and a real person. Also, she is funny, witty and charming and I can’t wait until we all get to hang out again.

It’s weird how we can’t seem to find the time to get together with people and that life in LA is so busy. You start to think of life as a very removed entity, almost as if everyone is living in a bubble. But then something extraordinary happens.

This afternoon I was driving around alone in Beverly Hills doing some errands. I was stopped on Santa Monica waiting to make a left onto Canon to go get “the sandwhich,” when I saw a car just like Brad’s coming toward me. Right as the car was about to cross the intersection, I saw the blue and silver mardi gras beads Brad has hanging from his rearview mirror and as the car passed me, Brad and I waved at each other. It’s not only amazing that we would run into each other randomly like that when we had no idea either would be in that same part of town at the same time, it’s also astonishing to me that we’d both actually notice each other. How often does that happen?!

When I started my Friendster blog a few years ago http://knewlove.blogs.friendster.com/random_occurances_traffic/ it was because of one such “coincidental” passing by when Jacob passed me in Laurel Canyon and I hadn’t noticed. I really have to find the time to update this website with all the archives from blogs past.

I have been trying to find my 2005 w2/w4/w9/1099 or whatever paperwork for weeks!  Apparently the IRS lost all my stuff and is now trying to fine me a buttload of money for various offenses.  Since Brad moved in, the apartment has been a disaster area.  FEMA is just now starting to send support, in their usual timely fashion.  But today, I FINALLY FOUND MY TAX PAPERWORK!  Yay!  Now, let’s please take a brake for a sip of wine.

Okay, now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Our friends Kirsten and Scott are getting married on the 30th.  Since Kirsty & Scott are kind of outdoorsy rockclimbing surfing hippies who meditate on the beach and are above the life of materialism and excess, it was difficult deciding what to get them for their wedding gift.  Brad and I have been painting big coffee mugs thinking/hoping that a homemade gift from the heart will be appropriate.  We’ve been painting since May and we completed the last installment of mugs today.

We walked in with our picnic basket of wine, grapes, crackers & cheese and sat down and got to work.  When I went to the drying station to solidify my first coat of paint, I looked up and realized that Oscar Winner Geena Davis was sitting a table away from us with a friend painting pottery as well.  Who knew?!  (Aren’t you proud of me Hiko?  You say I never notice anyone.  No more!)
